About the Pinaka
Pinaka is a multiple launch rocket system produced in India and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Army. The multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) has a maximum range of 45 km (28 mi) for Mark-I Enhanced and 120 km (75 mi) for Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) version, and can fire a salvo of 12 HE rockets per launcher in 44 seconds. The system is mounted on a Tatra truck frame.
Service history
Developed by DRDO's Armament Research and Development Establishment as an indigenous answer to the Soviet Grad, Pinaka was used in combat during the 1999 Kargil conflict while still under development, where it proved effective against fortified positions on high ground. Successive marks have extended range from 40 km to 75 km, and a guided variant adds terminal accuracy.
