About the Sarath

The BMP-2 is an amphibious infantry fighting vehicle introduced in the 1980s in the Soviet Union, following on from the BMP-1 of the 1960s.

History

Service history

Licence production of the BMP-2 began at Ordnance Factory Medak in 1987 under the name Sarath — 'chariot'. It became the standard mechanised infantry vehicle, and its hull is the basis for a family of Indian variants including the NAMICA anti-tank carrier, armoured ambulance and Carrier Mortar Tracked. A replacement under the Future Infantry Combat Vehicle programme has been in procurement for years.
